PSORIASIS:
An intergenerational perspective
An intergenerational perspective
PSORIASIS:
This project was inspired by my grandmother, Eileen.
After being diagnosed with psoriasis, I began to notice behaviours in myself that mirrored the “quirky” habits of my grandmother, who also lived with the condition. We both hoovered frequently, changed our bedsheets often, and covered our skin - all in an attempt to hide the visible symptoms of the disease.
Because my diagnosis came after her death, these discoveries made me see her in an entirely new light. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to use my experience with psoriasis to create a deeper connection to hers, allowing me to recognise the quiet ways she may have coped with the condition throughout her life.
Yet what began as an intergenerational exploration of inherited psoriasis, self-image, and coping mechanisms gradually evolved to something more. I came to realise that the stigma surrounding psoriasis directly shapes the experience of those who live with it, influencing confidence, behaviour, and the ways people choose to present themselves to the world.
This artist book seeks to create a space where those with psoriasis can feel understood, represented, and connected. Serving as both a testament and a celebration of the resilience, persistence, and patience required to live with a disease that impacts every aspect of life.
